Each type is formulated to meet specific thermal and physical requirements, and after firing is machined to precise tolerances. Made from high purity refractory clays and other ceramic raw materials, these IFB contain carefully graded organic filler which is burned out during manufacture to give a uniform, controlled pore structure. Standard sizes are 9" x 4.5" x 2.5" and 9" x 4.5" x 3", but custom sizes up to 24" x 9" x 3" can be produced without any cemented joints. Foundry Service supplies Hard "Super Duty" and "Medium Duty" Fire Bricks that are rated for superior strength in applications of over 3000ºF (1650ºC). They exhibit low shrinkage, excellent thermal shock resistance, and good resistance to alkali and carbon monoxide disintegration.
Specially-formulated mortars (both wet and dry) and patching plasters are available for use up to 3200°F with all grades of dense and insulating fire bricks. Mortar consistency can be adjusted by varying the amount of water to achieve the desired viscosity for dipping, troweling, or hand-packing applications.
